Resumo:
This study was conducted in the Ticuna indigenous community called Bom Caminho located at the city of Benjamin Constant (Amazon State), nationally recognized for producing handicrafts. The craft, the main source of income generation in the community, has the support of the Association of Ticuna Artisans Women from Bom Caminho - AMATU. The association was created with the purpose of organizing the production and marketing of handicrafts which is the strong point of the community, in order to enhance and disseminate the Ticuna culture and patrimony, as well as the development of projects for community development. This work aimed to conduct a study on the relationship of Ticuna population from Bom Caminho with a natural resource called arumã which is a herbaceous plant whose fibers are used to manufacture various products of Indian handicrafts. Data collection occurred through participatory tools: Timeline, Seasonal Calendar, Spoken Map of Current Moment and FOFA matrix (Fortaleza, Opportunity, Weakness and Threats). The community women have always worked with basketry, but worked in isolation, produced for home use, in the fields and it was rarely sold. When they could not sell the baskets, those were exchanged for clothes, household items and food products in nearby towns like Benjamin Constant, Tabatinga and Leticia, in Colombia. From the creation of AMATU on, the artisans began to organize and work together, with the support of AMATU they have attended craft training courses providing the highest quality products and better market acceptance, receiving many more orders on a large scale. Thus, there was a high increase in handicraft production and consequently the family income and quality of life of artisans. Therefore, the main raw material used for making the baskets, the arumã, has come under great pressure. As a consequence, this natural resource is disappearing nearby community, thus hindering the work of artisans as the time taken to collect arumã could be spent to develop other activities. Thus, this very important material to Bom Caminho’s artisans need to be better cared for, so in the future, it will not disappear harming the main source of economy of the families of this community.
