Sustainable forest management in small-scale MFSPE is developed in communities of
Sustainable Development Reserve-RDS Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil, since 2009. Yet, to date,
there was still no study that would evaluate this project. This paper proposes to evaluate the
MFSPE within the RDS, recovering the history logging, studying the production chain managed
timber, raising socioeconomic data and identifying bottlenecks which still hinder the
consolidation activity in the Reserve. As methodology, timeline tool was used to obtain
information from the residents, open questionnaires and monitoring of activities in place to get
all the necessary information. As a result it was noted that historically, the wood has always been
the main source of income for the communities. The production chain of wood needs to be
managed more efficiently, including wood processing for value addition and utilization of
residues from forestry for sale to the industry that uses wood as an energy source. The forest
management project has brought improvement of life for residents, and per harvest, each family
earns about R $ 4,320.00. Problems in conducting forestry activities still exist, such as low
timber on the local market, lack of ground transportation to remove the wood from within the
management area, seasonality of the river, takes the environmental licensing process, among
others, but the few, has been overcome. Despite the difficulties, the activity has a promising
future. With the tax exemption, the licensing bureaucracy, governmental and non-governmental
incentives, sustainable forest management tends to consolidate itself as promising activity in the
RDS Rio Negro. |
