Resumo:
The present work tries to develop novel technologies for enhancing the utilization of five managed tropical timber species, furnish reliable data for their manufacturing into non-structural EGP at a regional level and for indicating new ones to be used in this market. The studied material comprised wood from Angelim pedra (Himenolobium pulcherrimum), Angelim vermelho (Dinizia excelsa), Breu vermelho (Protium puncticulaton), Murici (Byrsonima crispa) and Piãozinho (Micrandropsis scleroxylon), obtained in the municipality of Manaus / AM, (ZF-2 / EEST / INPA - BR-174 and Madeireira Portela). The logs were processed in planks / boards and dried at 12% moisture in a microwave system. Chemical (total extractives, water solubility, NaOH solubility, lignin, crude cellulose, pH and ash) and physical-mechanical (basic density, apparent density, modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) and moisture) properties were assessed obeying the normative procedures. The five different timber species were machined and pre-machined into (25 x 50 x 240 mm) and (C = 10 mm, α = 31 °, P = 1 mm) parts, for the manufacture of the EGPs using an industrial spindle. Cold and hot polyvinyl adhesive PVA was used on the top and side junctions, respectively, whereas cold EPI was only used on the lateral surface, utilizing a pneumatic press. Test specimens (14.00 x 10.00 x 2.5 cm) were used in the roughness, sandpaper granulometry and coating assays. EGPs’ bonding, static bending, traction and shearing assessment tests were performed. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's test. Timber species physical-mechanical properties assessment results presented an 0.62 g/cm³ average (basic density) and 12,528 MPa (MOE). The chemical part related to NaOH solubility (8.24%) and pH (6.31) showed to be directly related to the physical-mechanical attributes of the wood and EGPs. The lowest roughness value was obtained with 180 grain sandpaper (Piãozinho - 0.0094 μm). As to the varnishes, Murici and Piãozinho panels have shown to be the ones which consumed the least in their application. Regarding EGPs’ coating, Piãozinho, Angelim pedra and Breu vermelho, were those that obtained the best degree of fixation. The best results on static flexion and traction were obtained with Piãozinho, 37.29 and 18.08 MPa. Red Angelim (10.89 MPa) and Piãozinho (10.74 MPa) shear using EPI adhesive presented the highest resistance. Panel wood properties overall assessment showed Piãozinho and Angelim pedra to presented the best technological aptitude for the EGPs manufacturing. This assessment confirms these timber species to be good for the production of these panels by assisting on the decision-making for their exploitation sustainable management programs.
