ojs-article-1462025-02-19T16:56:08Z A fauna da África e da Ásia descrita pelos viajantes cristãos entre os séculos XIII e XV The fauna of Africa and Asia described by Christian travelers between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries Gonçalves, Rafael Afonso Durante os séculos XIII a XV, um número significativo de cristãos latinos se lançou em incursões para destinos muito além dos limites da cristandade, como a Índia, a China, a Mongólia e as costas da África. Para contar a seus conterrâneos o que haviam visto naquelas terras desconhecidas, muitos desses viandantes colocam por escrito suas memórias e impressões. Entre as diversas descrições presentes nesses relatos, chama a atenção o espaço reservado aos animais que habitavam aquelas terras – alguns até então incógnitos, outros já familiares. Esta nota visa apresentar algumas opções e desafios de pesquisa ainda em andamento, cujo objetivo principal é a catalogação das espécies mencionadas pelos viajantes. Entre as informações que se propõe a recolher, o catálogo procura saber qual era a variedade das espécies descritas, como eram denominadas e classificadas, em quais lugares eram comumente encontradas, quais suas principais características e seus comportamentos e como eram normalmente utilizadas. During the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, a considerable number of European Christians traveled to destinations far beyond the limits of Christianity, such as India, China, Mongolia and the African coasts. To tell their countrymen what they had seen in those unknown lands, many of these travelers wrote their memories and impressions. Among the many descriptions on these reports, the ones about the animals that inhabited those lands – some completely unknown, others familiar to them – draw attention. The aim of this brief research note is to present the main options and challenges of an ongoing research project, whose goal is to promote an accurate cataloging of the species mentioned by travelers. Among the data that will be collected, the catalog seeks to identify how those animals were named and classified, in what places they were commonly found, what were their main characteristics and behaviors and how they were used by natives.
