Marginalization, poverty, the destruction of the family, lack of education, and the fact that many
crimes are economically compensatory to the offender are factors that have contributed to many
Tocantins people becoming involved in crime. In this context, this work focuses on the
socioeconomic survey of the prison population in the southern region of the State of Tocantins,
combined with the investigation of probable factors that have a direct relation with the entry of
the mentioned individuals into the delinquent activity. The study also seeks to point out the
facilitating elements, as well as possible difficulties faced for the implementation of public
security policies and public security policies at the state and municipal levels, indicating some
possible ways to deepen the examination of public policy management, with focus in the
prevention of crime, in an attempt to determine and minimize social problems related to
violence, with a focus on prevention. Thus, prevention and repression are essential to combat
crime, as long as they are associated with public policies aimed at preserving the family,
reducing inequalities and inhibiting factors that make crime economically viable.
