Animal nutrition research provides information about the ingredients used as well as their composition and how it can affect animal performance. Knowledge of the composition of the food being supplied to the animals is essential to ensure good productivity, as well as to evaluate the cost / benefit with the reality of production. O presente artigo trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica que, partindo da compreensão da importância dos alimentos na nutrição de pequenos ruminantes tem como objetivo demonstrar o potencial dos alimentos, a importância da suplementação afim de superar as deficiências nutricionais e elevar o desempenho dos animais. A pesquisa em nutrição animal fornece informações a respeito dos ingredientes utilizados bem como sua composição e como esta pode afetar o desempenho animal.
