This work starts from the question: does pineapple in the central region of Tocantins have the
potential to be a Geographical Indication (GI)? Important intangible asset granted to producers
that can bring several benefits, such as valuing the production and cultural chain, self-
identification, attribution of reputation, as well as socio-economic development of the region.
Therefore, the importance of Intellectual Property as a necessary instrument to protect and
facilitate the economic valuation of these intangible assets grows. In turn, the Geographical
Indication corresponds to a record, attributed to a product or service that is characteristic of a
certain region, originating in a delimited geographic area, which presents differentiated quality
due to its natural and human resources, such as: climate, soil, vegetation and know-how. What
makes it different from similar products available on the market due to its reputation and
quality, or other essential characteristics attributed to this geographical origin. Therefore, the
present project aims to understand the feasibility of obtaining the Geographical Indication
record for pineapple farming in the central region of Tocantins. It studies the resources
necessary to obtain the registration, identifies and describes the attributes of quality, typicality,
tradition and notoriety to obtain the GI registration, and checks if there is feasibility for the GI
registration of pineapple farming in the central region of Tocantins. To this end, field research
is used, with the aid of the SEBRAE guide "Technological Solution for the Assessment of a
Potential Geographical Indication - Consultant's Guide", with the application of a questionnaire
for the collection of qualitative and quantitative primary data, applied in on-site visits and
teleconferences with producers, consumers, EMBRAPA, SEAGRO and other representatives.
As a result, the diagnosis points to a more favorable GI record in the Indication of Origin (IP)
modality, given the existence of greater scientific evidence of the region being recognized in
the market as a pineapple producing center and there is historical and market evidence that are
capable of proving that the geographic region is recognized by consumers as a production
center, with reputation and notoriety. On the other hand, it emphasizes the possibility of
registration in Denomination of Origin (DO), due to the regional agroclimatic influences
(climate, sun exposure and soil) on the final result of the product, mainly in the sweeter quality
and cylindrical shape of the fruit. The set of know-how (produce) and regional influence on the
quality of Pineapple from Tocantins is notorious for reputations among specialists. Finally, it
brings as an appendix a simplified Technical Report of the diagnostic product, with a proposal
for a solution to the identified governance problem, resulting in a governance structure based
on the use of strategic tools, CANVAS, SWOT and 5W2H, formed and elaborated in around
the Tocantins Pineapple product, with key producers and partnerships, UFT, SEAGRO,
EMBRAPA and SEBRAE, which can make it possible to advance the IG order, consequently,
the possible aggregation of values throughout the cycle. |
