This research discusses the terminological renewal in braziliam sign linguage from the
activities of four Working Groups of evangelicals denominations: (1) Clamor do Silêncio,
(2) Manuário Sinais Bíblicos, (3) DOT Brazil Glossary and (4) Sinalário Bíblico. The
general objective is to describe the factors that favor the dissemination and
standardization of term signs in the biblical context and the specific objectives are: (1) to
describe factors that favor the need for the emergence of new signed terminological units,
(2) to describe attitudes of the groups of Work that favors the dissemination and
standardization of these new units and (3) describing attitudes of leaders and participants
in the biblical context also favors the dissemination and standardization. To support this
endeavor, we rely on the foundations of terminology in general (ANDRADE 1997,
BARBOSA, 1998) and terminology involving sign languages (FARIA-NASCIMENTO,
in press, FAULSTISH, 2018), as well as notions of linguistic policy involving sign
languages (Schermer, 2012). Data collection involved participant observation, document
analysis and interviews. We identified three factors that favor the emergence of new
signed terminological units: (1) new concepts demand new term-signs, mainly signs that
are conceptually grounded (visual concept), (2) the fear of committing heresy, with signs
considered inappropriate and (3) resistance to typing signals. The actions, that seem to
favor the dissemination and standardization of new term signs are: (1) the demand for the
creation of new signs by the deaf; (2) the creation works are led by the deaf; (3) there is
a recommendation for the use of these signs; (4) the members of the work groups are
active in institutions linked to the evangelical denomination; (5) there are deaf members
from all Brazilian states; (6) the registration of new signs takes place in virtual glossaries
with easy access and free dissemination support and (7) the holding of major events
involving the national deaf community. In the analysis of preaching by deaf pastors and
an excerpt from the Bible in Libras, we identified strategies for dissemination and
standardization, which are: (1) the use of new term-signs; (2) the use of the old term-sign
with the new term and; (3) the use of manual spelling with the new sign-term and we have
also noticed, in some moments; (4) the use of both manual spelling and the old sign-term
with the new sign-term. |
