Addopting the methodological approach of dismantling the documentary CATARSE – The First Three Decades of Palmas Theater, we rely on concepts such as staging, occurrence, experience, performance, memory, forthcoming and fabulation as evidence that notwithstanding the fact that documentaries are known for having different features from those seen in fiction cinematography, it holds no fictional traits. Such is theoretically supported by the fields of communication, arts, philosophy and sociology, as well as by works of personalities of both theater and cinema, such as Eduardo Coutinho, Bertolt Brecht, Meyerhold, Vertov, and Charles Chaplin. Este trabalho conjuga o teatro e o cinema no gênero documentário e trilha a presença da fabulação, entendendo-a como espaço para uma estética da comunicação. Tendo como aposta metodológica a desmontagem do documentário CATARSE – As três primeiras décadas de teatro Palmense, lançamos mão de conceitos de encenação, acontecimento, experiência, performance, memória, devir e fabulação para evidenciar que embora o documentário tenha se constituído como um sistema diferenciado em relação à cinematografia de ficção, não há nele características ficcionais.
