CNPQ::OUTROS This academic research presents an analysis of the work Bastidores (1997), by Rosana Paulino. It is understood that the work forms meanings and definitions, based on the theory of symbolic forms, developed by the German philosopher Ernst Cassirer. Bastidores is a series of photographs of black women produced by printing photographs on fabric, in which mouths, eyes, forehead and throat were sewn/embroidered with dark thread, in a tangle of disordered stitches/traces. The research was characterized as a qualitative investigation, starting from an epistemological approach. The following topics were considered and, later, the following reference sources. As for the themes, there are: race, racism, racial democracy, representations of black women in art and the meanings and meanings that can be attributed to the work Bastidores. As reference sources: Nepomuceno (2013), Carneiro (2011); Gomes (2005); Neuza (2008); Cassirer (1994). Furthermore, the foundations of interdisciplinary social research of a qualitative nature were sought as a reference basis, touching on issues of culture and territory, using authors such as Cassirer (1994); Pigeon (2006); Haesbaert (2007); Bhabha (1998). As research contributions, it was highlighted that art, as a symbolic form, assigns meaning to the world and to the manifestations of human action (artist), as well as meanings and meanings to the artistic work produced by Rosana, in the work object of study of this academic research. This time, the work Bastidores, by raising several layers of possible readings, makes it possible to understand how the representations of black women, in this artistic work, permeate social discussions about racism, so violently present in social relationships. This academic research presents an analysis of the work Bastidores (1997), by
Rosana Paulino. It is understood that the work forms meanings and definitions, based
on the theory of symbolic forms, developed by the German philosopher Ernst Cassirer.

sewn/embroidered with dark thread, in a tangle of disordered stitches/traces. The
research was characterized as a qualitative investigation, starting from an

democracy, representations of black women in art and the meanings and meanings
that can be attributed to the work Bastidores. As reference sources: Nepomuceno
(2013), Carneiro (2011); Gomes (2005); Neuza (2008); Cassirer (1994). Furthermore,
the foundations of interdisciplinary social research of a qualitative nature were sought
as a reference basis, touching on issues of culture and territory, using authors such as
