Social inequality is intrinsic to the Brazilian reality; in this scenario, social policies become relevant, as they are a mechanism for coping with poverty, through access to goods and services to those who can not provide them, and simultaneously instrument of the State for the containment of social conflicts. Considering these elements, this study deals with social policy, from its origin with emphasis on social assistance policy, as well as the historical trajectory in the Brazilian scenario. From the analysis of the social reality, it was possible to understand and conceptualize fundamental elements such as the social question and the poverty, and the forms of confrontation in Brazil. In this discussion, the mechanisms of income transfer, such as the Continuous Benefit Benefit (BPC) and the Bolsa Família Program (PBF), assume relevance, being the object of study of this research, the transfer of these resources to the municipality of Miracema do Tocantins-TO at the period between 2004 and 2016. The methodological procedure adopted was the dialectical historical materialism, the bibliographical and quantitative research, being fundamental the information collection in the official database, made available by the Ministry of Social and Agrarian Development (MDSA), among other sources officials. The research revealed that the transfer of income to the municipality studied was fundamental for the reduction of social inequality, but other structuring policies are necessary
