The central problem was to analyze to what extent students can associate the contents of geography with the place in which they live. The research was conducted with first-year, second-year, and third-year high school students. The work also investigated the perspectives of the students in relation to the geographical location in which they reside and their understanding of the relationship with the discipline of Geography. In addition, they sought to determine the relevance of this field of study in their daily lives. To achieve the objective, a qualitative methodology was used, using fieldwork, interviews and questionnaires. The research was based on authors such as Santos (2005), Tuan (1983), Ferrara (2003), Castellar (2005), Nascimento (2012), Minayo (2001), Godoy (1995), who contributed to the reflections on the concept of place. Based on this theoretical foundation, it was possible to understand that the place goes beyond its cultural and human characteristics, incorporating the affectivities of the subjects and allowing them to know their history and understand the events of the place. The results revealed adversities in the geographical perceptions of the students in relation to the place in which they reside. Neste trabalho, foi realizado um estudo sobre a categoria geográfica lugar, por meio das experiências de ensino de estudantes da Escola Estadual Piaçava no espaço rural do município de Nazaré, no norte do Estado do Tocantins, Brasil. A problemática central foi analisar em que medida os alunos conseguem associar os conteúdos de geografia com o lugar em que vivem. A pesquisa foi realizada com os estudantes do Ensino Médio do primeiro ao terceiro ano, do turno vespertino. O trabalho também investigou as perspectivas dos estudantes em relação à localização geográfica em que residem e sua compreensão da relação com a disciplina de Geografia, buscando também apresentar a relevância desse campo de estudos na vida dos alunos. Para alcançar o objetivo, foi utilizada metodologia de cunho qualitativo, com o uso de trabalho de campo, entrevistas e questionários. A pesquisa foi embasada em autores como Santos (2005), Tuan (1983), Ferrara (2003), Castellar (2005), Nascimento (2012), Minayo (2001), Godoy (1995), que contribuíram para as reflexões sobre o conceito de lugar. Com base nessa fundamentação teórica, foi possível compreender que o lugar vai além de suas características culturais e humanas, incorporando as afetividades dos sujeitos e permitindo que eles conheçam sua história e compreendam os acontecimentos do local.
