The research included the participation of 36 children, 9-11 years old, and their mothers. It was used as instruments the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Parental Styles Inventory and the Scale of Empathy for Children and Adolescents. The results indicate that scores of children's responses, regarding childrearing practices, were significantly lower than the scores of mothers, with a prevalence of negative practices in both perspectives. The parenting style is the predominant risk and below-average regular. It is found that higher levels of education of the children are related to higher levels of empathy. There is no correlation between maternal educational practices and levels of empathy. This study raised important information regarding childrearing practices, as the prevalence of negative practices in the surveyed mothers. The detection of this deficit raises the need for more comprehensive research on educational practices in low-income mothers, and the development of guidance and intervention programs that help mothers and fathers in the education provided to children. O presente estudo investigou as práticas educativas e os estilos parentais predominantes em mães de crianças de baixa renda e a relação destas práticas com a empatia das crianças. Participaram da pesquisa 36 crianças, de 9 a 11 anos de idade, e suas respectivas mães. Utilizou-se como instrumentos um Questionário Sociodemográfico, o Inventário de Estilos Parentais e a Escala de Empatia para Crianças e Adolescentes. Os resultados indicam que os escores das respostas das crianças, referentes às práticas educativas maternas, foram significativamente menores que os escores das mães, com prevalência das práticas negativas em ambas as perspectivas. O estilo parental predominante é o de risco e o regular abaixo da média. Verifica-se que maiores níveis de escolaridade das crianças se relacionam com níveis mais altos de empatia. Não há correlação entre as práticas educativas maternas e os níveis de empatia. Este estudo levantou informações importantes quanto às práticas educativas maternas, como a prevalência de práticas negativas nas mães investigadas.
