It generally affects individuals with a long duration of the disease (>10 years), however, it may be present at diagnosis in patients with DM2 or manifest early, within the first five years of the disease, in patients with DM1. Additionally, once diagnosed, DN is usually irreversible, but its appropriate management in patients with early diagnosis increases the possibility of regression and stabilization of the disease, considerably delaying and preventing the onset of complications. The objective of this work was to create a protocol for diagnosing and treating diabetic neuropathy in an objective and didactic manner, with a focus on helping general practitioners and specialists, both in primary and tertiary care. The protocol was prepared using the integrative literature review method, which was divided into 6 phases. The first phase consisted of preparing the guiding question to define the studies to be included and then an integrative review was carried out in the PUBMED and SciElo databases with the terms “NEUROPATHY”, “TREATMENT”, “DIAGNOSIS”, “NEUROPATHY DIABETIC” and its counterparts in Portuguese. Guidelines from the main national and international diabetes scientific societies, one book and relevant information from relevant websites were also included. After data collection and analysis, 106 materials were used as theoretical references for the preparation of this protocol. This resulted in the construction of didactic and objective tables, charts and flowcharts. The clinical applicability of the study consists of providing a tool, not only for the specialist, but for the general practitioner at different levels of health care, with the aim of enabling effective care for individuals with DN. Thus, the main contributions of the protocol were the development of a total of 20 didactic and visual tools aimed at the prevention, tracking, diagnosis and treatment of DN. 5 flowcharts, 4 charts and 2 tables are authored by the author. A neuropatia diabética (ND) situa-se atualmente como a complicação crônica do diabetes mellitus (DM) mais frequentemente observada e, paralelamente, a mais subdiagnosticada, afetando até metade destes pacientes, dependendo da metodologia diagnóstica empregada. Geralmente acomete indivíduos com longa duração da doença (>10 anos), no entanto, pode estar presente ao diagnóstico em pacientes com DM2 ou se manifestar precocemente, nos primeiros cinco anos de doença, em pacientes com DM1. Adicionalmente, após diagnosticada, a ND costuma ser irreversível, porém o seu manejo adequado em pacientes com diagnóstico precoce aumenta a possibilidade de regressão e estabilização da doença, retardando e prevenindo consideravelmente o tempo de instalação das complicações. O objetivo deste trabalho foi criar um protocolo de diagnóstico e tratamento da neuropatia diabética de maneira objetiva e didática, com foco em auxiliar profissionais generalistas e especialistas, tanto na atenção primária quanto na terciária. O protocolo foi elaborado a partir do método de revisão integrativa da literatura, o qual dividiu-se em 6 fases. A primeira fase consistiu na elaboração da pergunta norteadora para definição dos estudos a serem incluídos e em seguida foi realizada a revisão integrativa nas bases de dados PUBMED e SciElo com os termos “NEUROPATHY”, “TREATMENT”, “DIAGNOSIS”, “NEUROPATHY DIABETIC” e seus correlatos em português. Também foram incluídas as diretrizes das principais sociedades científicas em diabetes nacionais e internacionais, um livro e informações relevantes de sites pertinentes. Após coleta e análise de dados foram utilizados 106 materiais como referencial teórico para a elaboração deste protocolo. Isso resultou na construção de tabelas, quadros e fluxogramas didáticos e objetivos. A aplicabilidade clínica do estudo consiste em disponibilizar uma ferramenta, não apenas para o especialista, mas para o clínico generalista nos diferentes níveis de atenção à saúde, com o intuito de possibilitar um atendimento efetivo ao indivíduo com ND. Dessa forma, as principais contribuições do protocolo foram a elaboração de um total de 20 ferramentas didáticas e visuais voltadas para a prevenção, o rastreamento, diagnóstico e tratamento da ND. Sendo que 5 fluxogramas, 4 quadros e 2 tabelas são de autoria própria.
