Maiandeua and Algodoal are islands of the Pará coast situated in the municipality of Maracanã at about 00°34'45" to 00°34' 12" lat. and 47°31'05" to 47°34' 12" long W. In the sandbanks of these islands the Polygalaceae family is represented by the genus Polygala L., with the species P. spectabilis DC, P. variabilis H.B.K., P. apressa Benth., P. monticola H.B.K. and P. adenopltora DC. We used material collected at the study sites and specimens from the MPEG herbarium. Morphological observations were made using a ZEISS stereomicroscope with a clear camera. The nomenclature used to indicate the form and the density of the morphological structures was based on the works of LAWRENCE (1973), RADFORD et al (1974) and RIZINNI (1977). P. spectabilis is a shrub with a cylindrical, woody stem with sericeous indumentum, elliptic leaves with sericeous indumentum on the ventral and dorsal surfaces, racemose inflorescence. P. variabilis is an herb with a cylindrical, herbaceous, glabrous, striate stem, acute, widely spaced, small, linear, scaly leaves, glabrous on both sides, inflorescence in glomerules. P. apressa is an herb with a cylindrical, herbaceous, glabrous, striate stem, acute, approaching, small, linear, fleshy, glabrous leaves, spiciform inflorescence. P. monticola H.B.K., herbaceous, cylindrical stem with sericeous indumentum, leaves approximate, oblong, alternate; inflorescence racemes. P. adenophora DC., herb with cylindrical, herbaceous, glabrous stem, spaced, acute, linear, fleshy leaves; inflorescence in a glomerule (CNPq/MPEG).
