This study is being carried out in the municipality of Benevides with the objective of getting to know the soil mesofauna in general, qualitatively and quantitatively, at the level of large groups. Monthly collections were made using a cylindrical steel probe, 7 cm high by 7 in diameter. Thirty samples were taken per environment, sieved into Berlese-Tullgren funnels and exposed to a progressively graduated light source for no more than 72 h. The obtained material was collected in containers containing fixative and deposited in glasses containing 80 % alcohol, followed by sorting and counting of the colt groups. The initial results show the predominance of the following groups: mites (Arachinida: Acari), ants (Hyrnenoptera: Formicidac), collembola (Collembola), and other invcrtebrates such as coleoptera, homoptera and millipedes. This is in agreement with several studies that state the expressive abundance of ants, termites, mites and collembola among the soil fauna of diverse regions. However, the number of termites collected so far was small in relation to the number of ants and the number of mites. This result is certainly due to the mode of spatial distribution and foraging period of the various termite species. A fauna de solo é composta por uma grande variedade de táxons, variando da microfauna até a megafauna, destacando-se em biomassa alguns grupos de insetos, aracnídeos e minhocas, variando de uma para outra região. Este estudo vem sendo executado no município de Benevides com o objetivo de conhecer qualitativa e quantitativamente a mesofauna de solo em geral a nível de grandes grupos. Coletas mensais foram realizadas com o uso de uma sonda cilíndrica de aço com 7 cm de altura por 7 em de diâmetro. Foram retiradas 30 amostras por ambiente, peneiradas em funis de Berlese-Tullgren e expostos a uma fonte luminosa progressivamente graduada por no máximo 72 h. O material obtido foi recolhido em recipientes contendo fixador e depositado em vidros contendo álcool a 80 % posterior triagem e contagem dos grupos colctados. Os resultados iniciais atestam a predominância dos seguintes grupos: ácaros (Arachinida:Acari), formigas (Hyrnenoptera: Formicidac), colêrnbolas (Collembola), e outros invcrtebrados tais como: os coleópteros, homópteros e milípedes. Isto está de acordo com vários estudos que afirmam a abundância expressiva de formigas, cupins, ácaros e colêmbolos entre a fauna de solo de diversificadas regiões. Todavia, o número de cupins coletados até o momento foi pequeno em relação ao número de formigas e ao número de ácaros.
