INTRODUCTION: the desire for motherhood is a characteristic of the human being, and it is common for some women to perceive this phase as a significant event in their lives. But with the advancement of technology what was a physiological process became a medical act, therefore it was observed certain behaviors, inadequate professionals actions and even the institutions themselves towards the parturients, revealing the current public health issue that the obstetrics violence is. According to the World Health Organization, obstetrics violence happens when there is any kind of verbal abuse, restricting the presence of companions, nonconsensual medical procedures, violation of privacy, refusal to administer analgesics as well as physical violence, among others. OBJECTIVES: to describe the nurses 'perception about obstetrics violence and understand the nurses' view of their autonomy concerning about obstetrics violence. METHODOLOGY: this is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, using a semi-structured interview technique with 10 nurses working at the Obstetrics Unit of the State Public Foundation - Hospital de Clínicas Gaspar Vianna (FHCGV), in Belém, Pará. The data were analyzed according to the technique of content analysis. RESULTS: it is observed that most of the nurses who participated have a wide understanding about the concept of obstetrics violence and its implications for women. However, related to the autonomy in a situation of obstetrics violence, there was such a divergence between the reports, the majority claimed to have autonomy in intervening and a small portion claimed heteronomy, which means lack of autonomy in the face of obstetrics violence situations. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: this study made it possible to understand that despite the efforts of a few decades, it is still necessary for the obstetrician nurse to assume her role and understand it, thus building a professional identity based on scientific evidence and legal support of her work.
