He obeyed the resolution 466/2012 and was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of Pará, through the opinion number 1389712. Results: Data were grouped into three study units, called "The (mis) understanding of older people on hypertension"; "The Treatment of Hypertension in the perception of the elderly" and "Complications of non-adherence to treatment of hypertension." Realized with the units that most seniors are unaware of the concepts of disease, associating it with the symptomatology of hypertensive peaks, in addition, it was found that most of the elderly understood as a treatment for hypertension medicine use, not making the combination of drugs with the lifestyle change. But there were those who reported in his speech that the treatment should be either through pharmacological measures as to healthy lifestyle habits. In contrast, most knew inform the complications that can occur due to non-adherence to treatment. Final Thoughts: We conclude that elderly hypertensive patients do not have sufficient information to be hypertension. thus realizing the importance of hypertensive elderly know this chronic disease, understanding how it happens and what can happen if there is no adherence to treatment. Therefore, it is necessary that health professionals, especially nurses, have effective communication with the patient, informing him through health education about the disease, treatment and the consequences of their non-compliance. Objetivo: Compreender o entendimento dos idosos hipertensos sobre a doença e as complicações advindas da não adesão ao tratamento. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo do tipo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa, realizada com 28 idosos matriculados na Unidade Básica de Saúde da Cremação, no Município de Belém. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de entrevista semiestruturada no período de Abril a Junho de 2016. As respostas dos sujeitos do estudo ás questões subjetivas foram analisadas de acordo com análise do discurso. Obedeceu-se a resolução 466/2012 e foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética e pesquisa (CEP) da Universidade Federal do Pará, através do parecer de número 1.389.712. Resultados: Os dados obtidos foram agrupados em três unidades de estudo, denominadas “O (des) entendimento de idosos sobre a hipertensão arterial”; “O Tratamento da Hipertensão na percepção dos idosos” e “Complicações da não adesão ao tratamento da Hipertensão”. Percebeu-se com as unidades que a maioria dos idosos desconhece os conceitos sobre a doença, associando-a com as sintomatologias de picos hipertensivos, além disso, verificou-se que grande parte dos idosos entende como tratamento para hipertensão a utilização de medicamentos, não fazendo a associação dos medicamentos com a mudança do estilo de vida. Porém houve os que relataram em seu discurso que o tratamento deve ser tanto por meio de medidas farmacológicas quanto a hábitos de vida saudáveis. Em contrapartida, a maioria soube informar às complicações que podem ocorrer devido á não adesão ao tratamento. Considerações Finais: Conclui-se que os idosos hipertensos não possuem informações suficientes do que seja a hipertensão arterial. Percebendo assim a importância do idoso hipertenso conhecer esta doença crônica, entendendo como ela ocorre e o que pode acontecer caso não haja a adesão ao tratamento.
