Specifically, it aims to examine the lexical level and the occurrence of referential cohesion mechanisms in argumentative texts. This research has as theoretical foundation Koch (2010), Fávero (2003), Marcuschi (2012), Val (2006), Cançado (1995), Cardoso (1999), among other authors dedicated to the study of linguistics, human language in its various aspects. This research follows the qualitative and quantitative methods, and can be classified as descriptive and explanatory, of an applied nature, being carried out in three stages: 1) Collection of material to compose the research corpus, through the application of two activities: a production textual and an activity of lexical comprehension and production; 2) Bibliographic research; 3) Analysis and interpretation of the corpus and data obtained. The results showed that the lexical “limitation” appears as an adverse factor to the students' performance regarding the use of lexical reiteration referential cohesion mechanisms in dissertative argumentative texts. Este trabalho inserido na área da Linguística Textual tem como objetivo geral analisar o conhecimento coesivo e lexical dos discentes de uma turma do 3º ano do Ensino Médio, de uma escola pública estadual, da cidade de Castanhal/PA, relacionando este com o desenvolvimento de coesão referencial. De forma específica, objetiva examinar o nível lexical e a ocorrência de mecanismos de coesão referencial em textos argumentativos. Esta pesquisa tem como embasamento teórico Koch (2010), Fávero (2003), Marcuschi (2012), Val (2006), Cançado (2015), Basilio (1995), Cardoso (1999), dentre outros autores que se dedicaram aos estudos da linguística, da linguagem humana, em seus vários aspectos. A referida pesquisa segue os métodos qualitativos e quantitativos, podendo ser classificada como descritiva e explicativa, sendo realizada em três etapas: 1) Coleta de material para compor o corpus de pesquisa, por meio da aplicação de duas atividades: uma produção textual e uma atividade de compreensão e produção lexical; 2) Pesquisa bibliográfica; 3) Análise e interpretação do corpus e dos dados obtidos.
