Introduction: The inguinal hernia is the result of the failure in the mechanism of the contention of the viscera, with the consequent expulsion of them or of the pre-peritoneal fatness. It’s the most common pathology that demands an important surgery; however, the result of the surgery is not always satisfied. Objective: to recognize the recurrent inguinal hernia clinical and epidemiological aspects of the University Hospital João de Barros Barreto (HUJBB). Materials and methods: transversal studies and retrospective, based on 521 files that belonged to patients of inguinal hernia under observation during the years 2005 and 2006 at the HUJBB; from this amount, 77 correspond to patients with recurrent inguinal hernia (target of the research). Discussion: the disease is more frequent to men in 90.9% of the cases. The population with recurrent inguinal hernia over the age 40 represented 80.5% of the cases, being the men who work in high level of strain are the most attacked (59.7%). The directs hernia were detected in 64.9% of the patients. In 80.5% of the cases, the recurrences were done in the first ten years before de last surgery procedure. The co morbidity show frequent in both gender. In male, the most prevalent were cardiovascular disease (32.6%); pneumopathy (26.1%) and uropathy (21.7%). The same was to the female but in distinct rate: pneumopathy 50.0%; cardiovascular disease 26.1% and uropathy 16.7%. Conclusion: Even so being hard to work on inguinal hernia cases, it makes necessary. A great comprehension about this problem of social interest can give considered result after a surgery procedure showing a reduced number of deaths of this disease.
