Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex and worrying condition that means much more than the level of glucose in the bloodstream. In addition to the metabolic complications resulting from high sugar levels and insulin resistance, there is an intrinsic connection between type 2 diabetes mellitus and the development of cardiovascular disease. Objective: To carry out an integrative literature review to answer the question: how does type 2 diabetes mellitus influence the development of cardiovascular disease? Methodology: In order to achieve the objectives, an integrative review was carried out to obtain information on the subject presented in this work. The inclusion criteria were: original full-length articles and reviews with international indexing; articles in English, Portuguese and Spanish; articles on cardiovascular diseases; articles on type II diabetes mellitus; articles on the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The exclusion criteria were: articles on non-diabetic metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular diseases unrelated to DM2; articles on diabetic complications unrelated to the cardiovascular system; articles unavailable in full; duplicate articles; articles inappropriate to the theme and/or guiding question and/or objectives; Results: After the literature search, 16 articles were selected to make up the body of the paper. Conclusions: The review made it possible to explore the complex interconnection between type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, revealing the intrinsic links that not only increase the risks, but also accelerate the process of the patient becoming ill as the risk factors that go beyond hyperglycaemia are overlooked. |
