Inadequate literacy can lead to increased patient morbidity. However, this topic is not widely disseminated in health sciences courses, which may result in undervaluing the importance of adapted communication in proper patient care. Therefore, this present monograph aims to "assess the perception of medical students from public colleges in Belém do Pará regarding the theme 'Health Literacy' and how this knowledge impacts their education." This is a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative study conducted at two medical colleges in Belém do Pará, Universidade Federal do Pará, and Universidade Estadual do Pará. The sample included 723 students enrolled from September to December 2022, and data were collected through questionnaires. The analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel and Bioestat 5.4, applying the Chi-square and G-test (α=5%, p ≤ 0.05%). It was found that socioeconomic data and the student's college of origin do not have a significant relationship with knowledge about Health Literacy. In some questions, there were differences between the basic, clinical, and internship cycles concerning the explanation of colloquial terminologies (p < 0.0001), difficulties in establishing doctor-patient relationships (p = 0.0379), prescribing for elementary school patients (p = 0.0008) and high school patients (0.0003), discussions about more comprehensible prescriptions in the educational curriculum (p < 0.0001), and lower risk of morbidity and mortality with Health Literacy (p = 0.0182). Additionally, students who are familiar with the concept of Health Literacy identify more tests that assess patient literacy (p = 0.0011); however, knowledge of the concept and the tests is low (15.49% and 4%, respectively). Moreover, the level of difficulty in establishing medical treatment increases with lower levels of patient education (p < 0.0001). In light of these findings, the subject is not adequately disseminated in the researched universities, both in the curricular and extracurricular contexts, and the majority of students are not familiar with the concept and characteristics of Health Literacy. More attention and research on the subject are urgently needed. O Letramento em Saúde refere-se à capacidade de um indivíduo adquirir, processar e compreender informações relacionadas à saúde, de forma que um letramento insatisfatório pode trazer maior morbidade ao paciente. Contudo, esse assunto é pouco difundido nos cursos de ciências da saúde, o que pode resultar em desvalorização da comunicação adaptada na condução adequada de pacientes. Portanto, a presente monografia tem por objetivo avaliar a percepção dos acadêmicos de medicina de faculdades públicas em Belém do Pará em relação ao tema 'Letramento em Saúde' e como esse conhecimento impacta ao longo de sua formação. Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo descritivo transversal realizado em duas faculdades de medicina em Belém do Pará, a Universidade Federal do Pará e a Universidade Estadual do Pará. A amostra incluiu 723 alunos matriculados no período de setembro a dezembro de 2022 e a coleta de dados ocorreu através de questionários. A análise foi realizada com Microsoft Excel e Bioestat 5.4, usando os testes estatísticos Qui-quadrado e teste G (α=5%, p ≤ 0,05%). Verificou-se que os dados socioeconômicos e a faculdade de origem do estudante não têm relação significativa com o conhecimento acerca do Letramento em Saúde. Em algumas questões, houve diferença entre os ciclos básico, clínico e internato no que tange à explanação sobre terminologias coloquiais (p < 0.0001), dificuldades de estabelecer relação médico-paciente (p = 0.0379), de fazer prescrição para pacientes com ensinos fundamental (p = 0.0008) e médio (0.0003), discussões sobre prescrição mais compreensível na matriz educacional (p < 0.0001) e menor risco de morbimortalidade com Letramento em Saúde (p = 0.0182). Além disso, estudantes que conhecem o conceito do Letramento em Saúde identificam mais os testes que analisam a literacia dos pacientes (p = 0.0011), porém o conhecimento do conceito e dos testes é baixo (15.49% e 4% respectivamente). Também, o nível de dificuldade de estabelecer condutas médicas aumenta quanto menor o nível escolar do paciente (p < 0.0001). Diante o exposto, o assunto não é difundido adequadamente nas universidades pesquisadas, tanto em nível curricular quanto no extracurricular e, também, a maioria dos estudantes não conhece o conceito nem as características do Letramento em Saúde.
