Health service waste differs from other groups of waste, as it presents particularities that require specific handling procedures. Among them, the possible presence of biological agents, which, once handled and disposed of incorrectly, can cause serious damage to the environment and public health. The present work sought to evaluate the implementation of the criteria established in the current legal and regulatory provisions for the management of health service waste in a public hospital in the city of Manaus/AM, taking into account the importance of adequate management of this group of waste. To assist in data collection, a checklist of management steps and a questionnaire were prepared for the collection team, applied during technical visits to the site. In view of the results obtained, it was found that there are nonconformities in the management of health service waste inside and outside the hospital, mainly regarding internal storage, segregation and lack of training of employees directly involved in the processes.
