Digitization is a technological procedure that translates into the capture of images of
documents and bibliographic records in the physical information supports a mechanical
process that employs technological resources of specific electronic devices for this purpose.
The devices modulate the information extracted from the documents in the physical support,
convert them into images of various formats and configure them for use in information
systems on computers, cell phones and tablets, among others, in Information Units (UI) of
different types. The product of this digitization procedure is called a digital representative,
which designates the scanned format of a document extracted from the physical medium.
The document is a physical support where the information is registered it can be of any
format, support or nature. In post-modernity, the current times, from the establishment of
Communication and Information Technologies (ICTs), several technological resources and
devices have been created and their configurations allow the transit of information contained
in physical supports to the various digital supports and their specifications. The digitization
procedure can bring informational benefits to UIs in the face of physical access to
information. Digitization in the context of libraries of different types with physical collections in
digitized format and made available in their respective digital repositories, there is the
possibility of accessing and retrieving bibliographic and documentary items remotely,
dispensing with the physical travel to the physical premises of this library. In this context,
there are other benefits identified from digitization, which translate into the preservation of
documents in physical format, due to the absence of physical contact with the works, the
risks of degradation and the possibility of simultaneous access and retrieval, through remote
access to bibliographic items and digitized documents. |
