The training of teachers and preceptors is decisive for modifying medical education in the country, and there is no way to train new professionals differently without competent and innovative teachers, whose professionals have a fundamental and indisputable role in the teaching-learning process of residents of RM. This study deals with the training of health preceptors and the importance of their qualification in the teaching-learning process of medicine. Given the complexity of the theme, we defined as general objective to evaluate the pedagogical competences of the Preceptory Course in Health in Tocantins and which, under the perception of medical residents, were more relevant and strategic in this context. To reach the proposed objectives, the technique used was the descriptive-exploratory research with qualitative approach method. Eight medical residency graduates from UFT - period from 2011 to 2016 - composed the sample of this study. The instrument of data collection was the semistructured interview, with content analysis method. It is hoped that the results of this study will contribute to the change and improvement of the quality of the Preceptoria em Saúde courses of UFT / ABEM, in the sense of introducing new methodologies and teaching didactics, both at the national level, and especially in the UFT and other medical teaching institutions in the region. The results obtained verified the relevance of the preceptor for medical training. It was concluded that the training and didactic training of the preceptor are of great relevance for him to succeed in his professional performance. A relevância do papel do preceptor na formação médica é incontestável. E por isso torna-se necessário fazer investimentos na sua qualificação. Tudo isso no sentido de aprimorar suas habilidades e atributos, especialmente as competências pedagógicas, visando à melhoria do processo de ensino-aprendizagem e estimulando a educação permanente. A formação de professores e preceptores é decisiva para modificar o ensino médico no país, e não há como formar de maneira diferente os novos profissionais sem habilitar competente e inovadoramente os docentes, cujos profissionais têm um papel fundamental e incontestável no processo ensino-aprendizagem dos residentes de RM. Este estudo aborda a formação do preceptor em saúde e a importância de sua qualificação no processo ensino-aprendizagem de medicina. Diante da complexidade do tema, definimos como objetivo geral avaliar as competências pedagógicas do Curso de Preceptoria em Saúde no Tocantins e quais, sob a percepção dos residentes de medicina, foram mais relevantes e estratégicas nesse contexto. Para alcançar os objetivos propostos, a técnica utilizada foi a pesquisa descritiva-exploratória com método de abordagem qualitativo. Oito formandos de Residência Médica da UFT – período de 2011 a 2016 – compuseram a amostra deste estudo. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi a entrevista semiestruturada, com método de análise de conteúdo. Espera-se que os resultados desse estudo possam contribuir para a mudança e melhoria da qualidade dos cursos de Preceptoria em Saúde da UFT/ABEM, no sentido de introduzir novas metodologias e didáticas de ensino, tanto em âmbito nacional, quanto, e especialmente, na UFT e demais instituições de ensino médico na região. Os resultados obtidos constatou-se a relevância do preceptor para a formação médica.
