Resumo:
This article aims to assess the main strengths and weaknesses of student assistance programs at the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP), considering the challenges imposed by the recent policy of budget reduction, aimed at Federal Institutions of Higher Education. The present research is qualified as bibliographical and documentary, based on the analysis of several authors, among them Romanelli, Brasil, Nascimento and Tinto, which serve as a theoretical reference to elucidate the contents related to the theme of this work with regard to the redemocratization of access to the higher education, student assistance programs that contributed to minimize dropout at IFES. Regarding the documentary research, this was carried out from the analysis of documents made available on the UNIFAP website such as management reports, PDI, CENSO, in order to evaluate student assistance policies within the scope of UNIFAP, especially with regard to the continuity of public policies aimed at restructuring and expanding Federal Universities, through the REUNI program, and Student Assistance, through the PNAES. It was verified, at the end of the research, the need to readjust the resources destined to Student Assistance, within the scope of UNIFAP, with the aim of greater coverage, in addition to the implementation of decentralized management with the participation of all those involved in the process, as well as such as carrying out more in-depth scientific studies aimed at the feasibility of sustainable Student Assistance programs, since the funds destined for these programs depend on resources from the Union.
