In Brazil there are 279,3 million premature births a year, occupying the 10th position in absolute numbers of premature births.The study aimed to discourse, through the review of literature, the main risk factors for preterm birth; Describe the role of the nurse in health promotion and prevention of these risk factors. The method used was a literature review of the narrative type. To obtain the data, we used the bibliographical survey conducted in major bibliographic databases and electronic journals portals: Bireme, SciELO, VHL, Lilacs, involving articles, monographs, dissertations and theses that address the major factors that lead to the birth of premature infants in the period 2001-2013.After the search for material on prematurity we showed that the production of scientific knowledge in the case of the main risk factors for prematurity, mainly addressed factors such as socioeconomic status, maternal education, ethnicity / race, maternal age, preeclampsia, urinary tract infection , vulvovaginal infection, iron deficiency anemia, twin pregnancy, gestational diabetes, alcohol abuse and drug abuse, malnutrition and underweight mothers.The study was of fundamental importance to improve our knowledge about the main risk factors for prematurity, since the incidence of preterm birth remains high in every year, mainly in developing countries like Brazil. Esta pesquisa teve como objeto de estudo o conhecimento produzido acerca dos principais fatores de risco que levam ao nascimento de recém-nascidos prematuros. A cada ano cerca de 15 milhões de bebes nascem prematuros no mundo. Mais de 1 milhão deles morrem dias após o parto. No Brasil há 279,3 mil partos de prematuros por ano, ocupando a 10ª posição em números absolutos de nascimentos prematuros. O estudo objetivou discorrer, através da revisão de literatura, sobre os principais fatores de risco para o nascimento de prematuros e descrever a atuação do enfermeiro na promoção a saúde e prevenção destes fatores de risco. O método utilizado foi a revisão de literatura do tipo narrativa. Para obtenção dos dados, utilizou-se o levantamento bibliográfico realizado nas principais bases de dados bibliográficos e portais de periódicos eletrônico: Bireme, Scielo, BVS, Lilacs, envolvendo artigos, monografias, dissertações e teses que abordam os principais fatores que levam ao nascimento de RN prematuros, no período de 2001 a 2013. Evidenciamos que a produção de conhecimento científico em se tratando dos principais fatores de risco para prematuridade, abordaram principalmente fatores como: situação socioeconômica, escolaridade materna, etnia/raça, idade materna, Doença Hipertensiva Específica da Gestação, infecção do trato urinário, infecção vulvovaginal, anemia ferropriva, gemelaridade, diabetes gestacional, abuso de álcool e outras drogas, má nutrição e baixo peso materno.
