The study is characterized in a qualitative field research, through participant observation and semi-structured interviews, aiming at a greater participation of the subjects involved in the research, which were three teachers, a representative of the school board and a representative of the Municipal Secretariat of Education. From the analysis of the collected information, it was possible to infer that the school professionals attribute the main causes of this problem to the student's family, however, it was observed that the school itself has not provided the proper attention to the problem. It was also identified the lack of attention and support to the school by the Department of Education of the municipality. O presente trabalho busca apresentar os resultados de uma pesquisa realizada em uma escola de Educação Infantil e anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental no município de Acará, a qual teve por objetivo investigar os fatores presentes na vida dos educandos que os levam ao fracasso escolar a partir da distorção idade-série, bem como identificar de que maneira eles se apresentam e como a escola pesquisada e também o sistema municipal de educação atuam para amenizar esse problema. O estudo se caracteriza em uma pesquisa de campo de cunho qualitativo, por meio da observação participante e entrevistas semiestruturadas, objetivando uma maior participação dos sujeitos envolvidos na pesquisa, os quais foram três professores, um representante da direção da escola e um representante da Secretaria Municipal de Educação. A partir da análise das informações coletadas, foi possível inferir que os profissionais da escola atribuem as principais causas desse problema à família do aluno, entretanto, observou-se que a própria escola não tem disponibilizado a devida atenção ao problema.
