It discusses about University Libraries, exhibits on the activity of Collection Development and how it contributes to the progress of the collection, and describes how the process of selecting the collection of a University Library, highlighting its criteria and sources that help this selection. Objective is to approach and identify the importance of the process of selection of the collection in University Libraries. Approach used to survey the research was the exploratory research through a bibliographical survey to subsidize the research, a documentary analysis of documents and articles on university libraries and the process of collection selection. It was concluded that well-developed collections directly influence the usability of the library. Therefore, the University Library should direct its collection with a view to accompany the teaching, research and extension activities of the University and, consequently, a strong accompaniment of the professional librarian in the selection process. This is the duty of selecting informational material that supposes the real informational need of the user. Apresenta um estudo realizado sobre o processo de Desenvolvimento de Coleções em Bibliotecas Universitárias, com enfoque na etapa de seleção. Discorre a cerca de Bibliotecas Universitárias, expões sobre a atividade de Desenvolvimento de Coleções e como contribui para o progresso do acervo, e descreve como ocorre o processo de seleção do acervo de uma Biblioteca Universitária, destacando seus critérios e fontes que auxiliam essa seleção. Objetiva abordar a importância do processo de seleção do acervo em Bibliotecas Universitárias. Abordagem utilizada para o levantamento da pesquisa foi à pesquisa exploratória através de um levantamento bibliográfico para subsidiar a pesquisa, foi realizada análise documental de políticas de seleção de acervo de duas Universidades Federais, leitura de livros e artigos sobre bibliotecas universitárias e o processo seleção de acervo. Concluiu-se que coleções bem desenvolvidas influenciam diretamente na usabilidade da biblioteca. Portanto, a Biblioteca Universitária deve direcionar seu acervo com vistas a acompanhar as atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão da Universidade e, consequentemente, um forte acompanhamento do profissional bibliotecário no processo de seleção.
