One of the major problems in Brazil refers to guaranteeing access to basic sanitation. Low levels of coverage of drinking water, sewage collection and solid waste services can negatively impact the health of the population. The present study aimed to analyze the impacts of basic sanitation on health performance in municipalities in the North region of Brazil in 2016, using data from the National Sanitation Information System (SNIS), referring to the total amount of the population served with water supply. of water and solid waste collection, and data from the Firjan Index of Municipal Development (IFDM), to obtain information on the public health performance of the population of the analyzed municipalities. The analysis used was the log-log regression technique, such a model manages to capture the constant elasticity between the explanatory and dependent variables, the percentage change in Y_i given a percentage change in X_i. The results showed that increases in water supply coverage and solid waste collection positively impact health performance. In addition, it was observed that municipalities located in states of the Western Amazon performed worse in the health indicator. It is concluded that the elaboration of a strategic investment plan is necessary, aimed mainly at the regions where there are the lowest rates of population served with basic sanitation coverage, aiming at the socioeconomic development of the municipalities and the improvement of public health. |
