However, it is believed that university libraries can also make use of these ICT resources and be very well benefited, not only in terms of greater communication reach with their community, but also for the promotion of education, interaction with users and the promotion of its products and services. From these considerations, in the development of this work we propose to address what are the resources and/or tools associated with ICTs that university libraries have used to go beyond their traditional physical space and, thus, also reach their users in the digital spaces. The study focused on the use of online social networks by libraries of Brazilian federal universities that are active in the National Register of Courses and Institutions of Higher Education, of the Ministry of Education (MEC). It is understood that from the moment libraries choose to make use of tools such as online social networks, they position themselves strategically before their community, given that the new human generations are increasingly prone to access to technologies, online connectivity and the rapid retrieval and absorption of information. Therefore, we must understand that we are living in a new phase of culture recognition in our society, which has been called digital culture, and it is necessary that libraries and librarians also dominate their place in this space. Com o advento da internet e o surgimento das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TICs), tem-se proporcionado à sociedade mais conectividade e, consequentemente, o transpassar das barreiras de comunicação presencial para alcançar o digital e virtual. Contudo, acredita-se que as bibliotecas universitárias também podem fazer uso desses recursos de TICs e serem muito bem beneficiadas, não apenas quanto ao maior alcance de comunicação para com a sua comunidade, mas também para a promoção da educação, a interação com os usuários e a divulgação de seus produtos e serviços. A partir dessas considerações, no desenvolver deste trabalho propomo-nos a abordar sobre quais são os recursos e/ou ferramentas associadas às TICs as bibliotecas universitárias têm feito uso para ir além do seu espaço físico tradicional e, assim, também alcançar os seus usuários nos espaços digitais. O estudo teve como foco o uso de redes sociais online pelas bibliotecas de universidades federais brasileiras e que estão em situação ativa no Cadastro Nacional de Cursos e Instituições de Educação Superior, do Ministério da Educação (MEC). Entende-se que a partir do momento em que as bibliotecas optam por fazer uso de ferramentas como as redes sociais online, estas se posicionam de modo estratégico perante a sua comunidade, haja vista que as novas gerações humanas estão cada vez mais propensas ao acesso a tecnologias, à conectividade online e a rápida recuperação e absorção de informações.
