This work with the theme: The practice of reading and writing through narrative genres in Portuguese language classes of elementary school -6th grade, aims to show the relevance of narrative genres for teaching reading and writing in Portuguese classes, a fact which led to the following question: What are the contributions that narrative texts bring to student learning in reading and writing. When demanding something from the student so that he can perform certain tasks, importance should not be given only to writing, making the student write meaningless, but rather learn to construct a text according to the rules of grammar, because writing is just a step in the process for the planning of a text and it is in this sense that the narrative genres will contribute to this action. For the development of the work, the methodology of qualitative research was carried out, as it allows for clearer projections that are interrelated with the topic under analysis. And as a data production tool, they took place through document analysis and bibliographic research. And to support the data and issues discussed, the studies of the following authors were chosen: Antunes (2009), Cagliari (2003), Fazenda (2001), Marcuschi (2005), Soares (2009), Rezende and Souza (2018). Analyzing the authors' references, it was concluded that the insertion of narrative genres in Portuguese language classes contributes to the learning of reading and writing of 6th grade students, as it allows them to learn the linguistic process in a way that relates to social and thus enabling the construction of the teaching-learning process with emphasis on reading and writing.
