The purpose of this article is to seek to understand how cultural activity is produced in the
lives of people who are deprived of liberty in the prison system of the state of Tocantins and,
at the same time, to verify the cultural connection that exists with the outside world, thus
analyzing prison life and prison culture in parallel with the reality of our society. This work
also seeks to appropriate the use of the geographic categories of place and territory and its
applicability within the prison and seeks to identify, through the bibliography of great names
in Geography, the best way to interpret the dissemination and despondency of prison culture
within the state of Tocantins. In this way, the work will address the forms of communication,
cultural artistic expressions, games, rules and the daily way of life of the inmates. Living in
prison revealed the assimilation of culture and the cultural marks that each ex-inmate person
takes to rest of his life. Although the state has many prison units, the work is based on the five
largest in the state, which is more than enough to enter the cultural universe behind bars.
